The Central Florida Master Choir celebrated works of “Love” in concert at Dunnellon Presbyterian Church on April 26, for the pleasure of about 190 people.

DPC Pastor Jeff Welch said Dr. Harold McSwain brought the choir to the church about 14 years ago at the invitation of the church’s former chorale director, Barbara Clovis.

“Barbara made the initial contact,” Welch said. “They like coming here for the great acoustics, and there is an audience for them.”

Welch said there are plenty of hard surfaces for the sound to bounce from in the sanctuary, which was dedicated on Sept. 29, 1895.

“You don’t really need amplification, but we use it for streaming, and they use it to balance the sound,” the pastor said.

Conductor Dr. Harold W. McSwain has assembled a diverse group of vocalists and musicians dedicated to promoting cultural awareness and the enjoyment of a wide-ranging repertoire of choral works, striving to reach, stimulate, and inspire a broad range of audiences and singers.

He led the choir through celebrated works of “Love” that included five Hebrew love songs; a “Piano Concerto in D Major” by composer Joseph Hayden performed by GayLyn Capitano, along with The New Moon String Ensemble. Soprano Christine Jones delivered a touching rendition of “Evergreen,” composed by Paul Williams and sung by Barbra Streisand.

Other compositions included “O Love” by Elaine Hagenberg and lyricist George Matheson; “Lida Rose/Dream of Now” by Meredith Wilson; and “Unusual Way” by Maury Yeston performed by soprano Carissa Baker.

Also, “Put a Little Love in Your Heart/Soul Train” by Jackie DeShannon and Jimmy Holiday performed by soprano Christine Jones-Woods. The concert ended with an “Orange Colored Sky” by Milton DeLugg and lyricist Willie Stein. The Central Florida Master Choir will return Dec. 20, at 3 p.m., for a Christmas concert. The church is located at 20641 Chestnut Street, Dunnellon, Florida, or you can find it online at Dunnellon Presbyterian Church.
